Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by degeneration of dopaminergic cells, which results in dopamine depletion. Levodopa is the most effective symptomatic treatment, however, disease progression along with the unfavorable pharmacokinetics of levodopa makes the disease increasingly difficult to treat with time.

Small RNAs, Big Consequences: Post-transcriptional Regulation and Adaptive Immunity in Bacteria
It is nowadays widely accepted that non-coding RNAs play important roles in post-transcriptional regulation of genes in all kingdoms of life. In bacteria, the largest group of RNA regulators are the small RNAs (sRNAs). Almost all sRNAs act through anti-sense base-pairing with target mRNAs, and by doing so regulate their translation and/or stability.

Thermochromic VO2-based materials for smart windows: Progress towards applications in buildings
Vanadium oxides are known to have rich polymorphs and devices using thermochromic effect often require absence of impurities, so that stringent process control is crucial for practical manufacturing of VO2 materials. In this work, a novel route for fabrication of VO2 thin films was developed thermodynamically and verified experimentally.

Disputation: From Macroscopic to Microscopic Dynamics of Superconducting Cavities
In this thesis I explore and present a novel technique to optimally charge the superconducting cavities with the particular example of the spoke cavities to be used for the ESS project in Lund, Sweden. The analysis reveals that slow charging with hyperbolic sine cavity voltage profile matches the signal bandwidth to that of the cavity which leads to energy efficient filling.

Architecture and function of the insulin granule secretion machinery
In this thesis, high resolution TIRF microscopy was used to identify rate limiting steps for insulin granule exocytosis in health and in type-2 diabetes, and to understand these steps at the molecular level. It is shown that granule docking is critical for sustained insulin secretion. In β-cells from type-2 diabetic donors, docking is compromised and no longer responsive to glucose.

Shining Light on Molecules: Electron Transfer Processes in Model Systems for Solar Energy Conversion Investigated by Transient Absorption Spectroscopy
In the recent years, solar energy conversion has attracted a huge research interest due to the potential application for limiting the greenhouse effect. In many solar cells and solar fuel cells, understanding of charge transfer (CT) and recombination is important for future improvement of the overall efficiency. One important tool for that is transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS).

Structural Determination of Drug Metabolites from Doping Classed Compounds Using Mass Spectrometry
Doping control in equine sports is important for a fair competition, but also to ensure the integrity of the betting system, as well as for animal welfare reasons. To detect the use of illicit compounds, screening for the parent compound is common. However, by using a metabolite as the analytical target instead, the detection time can be prolonged.

Production in a State of Abundance: Valuation and Practice in the Swedish Meat Supply Chain
This thesis is a sociological contribution to the study of abundance. It discusses the case of Swedish meat producers and how they persist in producing pork and beef despite a lack of demand and competitive disadvantages compared with foreign suppliers. In doing so, this study answers how abundance is perpetuated in the production of a foodstuff in over-supply.
