Sense and Sensibility: Four Essays on Evaluative Discourse
The subject of this thesis is the nature of evaluative terms and concepts. It investigates various phenomena that distinguish evaluative discourse from other types of language use. Broadly, the thesis argues that these differences are best explained by the hypothesis that evaluative discourse serves to communicate that the speaker is in a particular emotional or affective state of mind.

Modelling Techniques for Large-Eddy Simulation of Wall-Bounded Turbulent Flows
Large-eddy simulation (LES) is a highly accurate turbulence modelling approach in which a wide range of spatial and temporal scales of the flow are resolved. However, LES becomes prohibitively computationally expensive when applied to wall-bounded flows at high Reynolds numbers, which are typical of many industrial applications.

Effects of Ubiquinone-10 on the Stability and Mechanical Properties of Lipid Membranes
Ubiquinones are a group of fat-soluble molecules present in many biological membranes. The most abundant version in humans, ubiquinone-10 (Q10), plays an important role in the mitochondrial respiration chain and also functions as a powerful antioxidant. Accumulating evidence suggests that Q10 also could have other functions in the membrane.

Model Checking of Software Systems under Weak Memory Models
When a program is compiled and run on a modern architecture, different optimizations may be applied to gain in efficiency. In particular, the access operations (e.g., read and write) to the shared memory may be performed in an out-of-order manner, i.e., in a different order than the order in which the operations have been issued by the program.

Understanding Heparan Sulfate Biosynthesis and Functional Implications of Heparanase
Heparan sulfate (HS) proteoglycans are present on the plasma membrane of all animal cells studied so far and are a major component of extracellular matrices. Heparanase is an endo-ß-glucuronidase that cleaves HS chains at internally located ß-glucuronidic linkages1. Except its conventional enzymatic function, non-enzyme function and its function in the nucleus have been demonstrated recently.
