Dr Lawrence Klein, Chair of the History Faculty, University of Cambridge: ”The Culture of Politeness in Eighteenth-Century Britain”
In the later seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Britain underwent a growth of political and social stability. At the same time, ideas about ‘politeness’, and practices associated with it, became conspicuous in both London and the regions. This lecture considers how polite culture contributed to the growth of stability in eighteenth-century Britain. The answer pivots on the ways that politeness helped to foster civil society.
