Christian Piller, University of York: "Does Belief Aim at Truth?"
How are believing and truth related? Since Williams’s paper on ‘Deciding to Believe’ (1973), the idea that belief aims at truth has gained currency. In this talk, I will investigate some attempts to explain this idea and I will assess it with the aim of establishing an account of epistemic normativity. Although I will argue that believing is, by its very nature, constraint by what are taken to be truth-related reasons, this falls short of establishing any significant role for truth in explaining epistemic normativity.
