Prof. Paul Richards has pursued ethnographic research in rural Sierra Leone for more than four decades. Main research areas include agricultural technology, armed conflict, and the Ebola epidemic. In this lecture, Prof. Richards presents insights from the new book "Mary Douglas: Understanding Social Thought and Conflict".
Mary Douglas' innovative explanations for styles of human thought and for the dynamics of institutional change have furnished a distinctive and powerful theory of how conflicts are generated and can be contained, yet her work remains astonishingly poorly appreciated in social science disciplines today. Douglas' approach was rooted in her understanding of African ethnographic materials. The lecture will explore the wider relevance of this material to the understanding of human conflicts and their amelioration.
