Ludmilla Jordanova, Durham University: "Secular values and the portrayal of 'men of science' in the circle of Thomas Henry Huxley"
John Collier (1860-1934) painted many prominent physicians and scientists. He was related to Huxley by marriage, and published on his beliefs as well as on art. He painted the most iconic image of Charles Darwin, yet his work is little known and no one has attempted to interpret it. In this talk I plan to explore how and why he is worth studying, that is, to acknowledge the conceptual and methodological challenges involved.
