Hugo Valentin open lecture series: Combatting Language Endangerment and Death Language activism and New Speakers
Don Kulick is Distinguished University Professor of Anthropology at Uppsala University, where he directs the Swedish Research Council funded program Engaging Vulnerability (www.engagingvulnerability.se). He has conducted fieldwork in Papua New Guinea since the mid-1980s, documenting a Papuan language isolate called Tayap, which currently is spoken by fewer than 50 people. Together with linguist Angela Terrill, he recently completed a grammar and tri-lingual (Tayap-English-Tok Pisin) dictionary of Tayap. His book on his many years of linguistic and anthropological fieldwork with the speakers of the language will appear in spring 2019, titled The End: Adventures with a Dying Language (Algonquin Books).
