Dr Biswas is a specialist on leftist movements in Bengal and on the Partition of India. She is the author of Radical Face of Democratic Liberalism: A Study of Communist Politics in West Bengal 1947-77 (Calcutta UP, 2011) and currently researches governance in Bengal during the period 1858–1950. Dr Biswas will be speaking about the Communist Party of India (CPI), which at the time of the partition in 1947 criticised the nationalism of the National Congress Party as well as the divisive communal practices of the Muslim League. The CPI instead advocated a nation-building model based on the principle of national self-determination, which was criticised for fomenting separatism.
