"Conditions and Contingency: Perspectives on the Myth of Unidirectional ESD Scaling".
Martin Mickelsson is conducting his PhD in Environmental and Sustainability Education studying questions of scaling ESD-activities as learning processes, which is going to be defended in Spring 2020.
At the seminar Martin will present a draft of the discussion chapter of his upcoming thesis. This discussion chapter has two main parts, the first is a critical reflection on the choices made in this thesis thorough the lens of how other studies have dealt with, what in this thesis is discussed as scaling ESD-activities. Four studies where chosen, three from Southern Africa where the principal research focus of this thesis lies as well as one from Latin America.
The second part is a discussion on the thesis contribution of an additional myth of scaling, how the thesis results could address this myth and how the four studies outlined in the previous part can help in highlighting other aspects of said myth and the possibility of addressing it.
Coming out of the four research papers on scaling ESD-activities as transactional learning that constitute the thesis the discussion focuses on (1) scaling often being treated like we know that scaling is a straight forward, unidirectional process and (2) that approaching it as a transactional learning process opens new and valuable ways of approaching scaling of ESD-activities. This myth of unidirectionality is part of the synthesised results of the papers as well as what comes out of the literature on educational scaling. To unpack this myth in the discussion including the four studies and the present thesis the central line of reasoning is that scaling is characterised by contingency and continuity. Dewey (1938) emphasises existence as contingent and from a pragmatic perspective contingency and continuity can be viewed as encompassing a joint process. The continuity is the condition for the contingency, while the contingency reveals the continuity though the oncoming adjustment which accommodates the contingent, rendering it continuous with what came before.
