"A Multidimensional Approach to 'better than'"
Larry Temkin and Stuart Rachels have devised Spectrum Cases as a challenge to the traditional transitive model of 'better than' comparisons and corresponding principles of rational choice. Moreover, Ruth Chang has argued that besides 'better than', 'equally good', and 'worse than' there is a fourth value relation 'being on a par'. In this talk, I lay out the beginnings of a multidimensional theory of ordinal 'better than' comparisons with an accompanying lexicographic value aggregation method. The theory does justice to the intuitions behind Spectrum Cases and parity without forcing us to give up the transitivity of overall betterness for comparable items. However, the increased expressiveness of a multidimensional account leads to (known) problems with the aggregation of value aspects.
