PDE and applications: Deriving macroscopic equations for complex systems

Complex systems are commonly investigated through microscopic, Individual-Based Models, which predict the evolution of each individual in time. However, macroscopic models, describing the overall behaviour of the system are often easier to analyse.
Establishing the link between microscopic and macroscopic models is the central task of kinetic theory. However, some of the classical techniques from statistical mechanics fail for complex systems due to the specific nature of the individual's interactions.
In this seminar I will discuss the challenges and advantages of going from a microscopic to a macroscopic description of complex systems and present how to do this for the application of sperm dynamics.
