Marit Melhuus, Oslo University: "From natural difference to equal value: the case of egg donation in Norway"
Although contested, egg donation has been consistently prohibited in Norway since the first law regulating assisted conception was passed in 1987. Whereas the dominant discourse regarding sperm and egg donation has been grounded in a differential treatment of sperm and eggs, ascribed to the natural difference between men and women, this position has more recently been challenged by an egalitarian principle of sameness and equality. I examine this discursive shift. My overall focus is on legislative processes as state practice and on the values that are mobilized to underpin a particular legal provision. More specifically, I am interested in how the state is implicated in both the configuring and reconfiguring of kinship and gender relations and indicate some recent dilemmas.
