As part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, wired connections are increasingly being replaced by wireless solutions to quickly and easily connect new systems and components. However, wireless communication has the disadvantage that not all messages are safely received. Therefore, existing and new systems in control and automation technology need to be adapted to manage data loss, delays and cope with shared and limited resources.
In this lecture, we will consider a simple example of a SISO control loop where the connection between the sensor and the actuator is replaced by a wireless connection such that data packets might randomly be lost and not reach the receiver. We show under which conditions the system can be stabilised despite data loss. We will also look at the effects of using an energy harvesting sensor and controlling the communication process.
