Jeremy Page, Uppsala University: "Understanding and Aesthetic Appreciation"
This paper introduces the Understanding View (UV) of the aesthetic judgment of the character of artworks. UV argues that aesthetic understanding is a pre-requisite for the issuing of aesthetic judgments, and that aesthetic judgments express aesthetic understanding. Other theoretical (and ‘traditionalist objectivist’) accounts of aesthetic judgment have recently come under attack because of their perceived inability to accommodate our intuitions regarding autonomy and testimony; and to solve what has recently been dubbed ‘Kant’s Problem’ (see Gorodeisky and Marcus 2018, esp. 122). UV is unpacked and the neat solution to Kant’s Problem which it offers is explored.
