Methods as Bridges for Cross-Disciplinary Conversations
What are the possibilities for research methods to facilitate cross-disciplinary research? Research methods are integral to scientific practice. Yet, there are many ways to systematically generate and work with data and there are many ways in which methods figure in the scholarly landscape of disciplines and cross-disciplinary encounters. Methods can at times appear to be somehow entwined with disciplinary distinctiveness and thus appear as barriers to transformative cross-disciplinary conversations. At other times methods can serve as bridges for building cross-disciplinary communities. The aim of the Circus 2022 symposium is to explore the capacity for research methods to foster fruitful new cross-disciplinary encounters.
October 6th, 09.00-12.00
The Dynamics of Methods in the Wild
What happens when “our” methods become discussed and appropriated in settings outside the controlled confines of academia? The second half-day of the symposium turns to examine the dynamics of methods moving into policy settings and other broader social contexts. What happened, for instance, when bibliometrics moved from the scientific field of scientometrics, analysing scholarly publishing as a scholarly endeavour, to a tool in research policy settings.
Coffee breaks and lunch are included. The program on October 5th will be followed by a reception with refreshments.
