The settlements of the Arctic regions are characterized by large swings in population size depending largely on resource extraction, military expansion, and other outside factors. The Russian Arctic is home to over half of the Arctic population and underwent a development path that was quite different from the other Arctic regions. This resulted in the loss of a sizable portion of its population in the immediate post-Soviet period. This talk will examine population and development trends in the Russian Arctic and other Arctic regions.
