Sandra Takei is a PhD student at King’s College London researching how students choose their subject specialisms at age 16 in English secondary schools. This seminar will examine the processes influencing the subject choices of boys and girls in traditionally gendered school subjects, physics and languages. Analyses are based on case studies of 5 secondary schools which had distinctly different patterns of participation in these subjects. Students across all the schools reported aspects of the school curriculum and classroom culture in each of these subjects which perpetuated gender stereotypes and made some students feel excluded based on their gender and other aspects of their identities. Nonetheless, school policies and practices regarding subject provision and choice were observed to mitigate these factors at some schools. Opportunities for discussion and feedback on this doctoral research will be provided throughout the seminar.
