Abstract: In Sweden as in other countries, disability is legally recognised as a ground of discrimination. However, to what extend is it comparable to other grounds of discrimination?

This talk starts from the observation that sociology has surprisingly little to say regarding this question. Indeed, while most social scientists would probably agree that disability implies disadvantages, difficulties and/or differences, the topic of disability has not much triggered the sociological imagination so far.

Drawing upon disability studies and social stratification studies, this talk examines whether disability can be considered as an element of social stratification in its own right. It concludes by proposing that disability can be conceptualised as social division on the same basis as gender, ethnicity and class.
