This seminar examines the doctrine of ‘state civilization’, and how this has been shaped by representatives of Russian society – intellectuals, policymakers and religious elites – since the mid 2000s.

The paper written for this seminar identifies the foundations of this doctrine in a myth about the Russian state. And it connects the evolution of this doctrine to a narrative about Russia’s necessary defence of self-determination in Crimea.

The central argument is the justification for this foreign policy is a supra-national and anti-progressive ideology, which expresses an absolute faith in the ability of the Russian state to manage conflicts of national self-determination. The trouble with this faith is that it is based on nothing more than a communitarian illusion.

The seminar concludes with a discussion about the intersection of faith and political ideology.
