Abstract: Rape is often regarded as an example of what Michael Taussig calls a “public secret,” something everyone in a society knows about but cannot speak of openly. What creates and sustains this public secrecy? In my research, I examine the role of literary representations of sexual violence and their potential to both underpin and undermine the public secret of rape, focusing on reuses of ancient myths.
At the seminar I will discuss a number of ancient and modern literary texts with this question in mind. How can we explain the enduring appeal of these stories? And how can we understand the relationship between their continual recycling and the way in which Western cultures construct rape?
