Dr. Amanda Krause, James Cook University (Australia): "Self-reported favourite musical experiences and how we might promote life-long investment in musical activities"
A growing body of research has begun to examine musical investment and well‐being; yet very little has considered how best to promote life‑long investment in music. We will present findings from an Australian Research Council funded discovery project, focused on generating knowledge about how and why we should invest in music-making to promote well-being. In particular, we will focus on recent work examining the characteristics of people’s favourite musical experiences which indicated that these are complex, multidimensional, and that categorisation of the participants’ descriptions aligns with Gabrielsson’s Strong Experiences with Music Descriptive System. These findings will also be considered alongside project findings concerning the psychosocial variables related to continuing versus ceasing musical participation, the reasons why people cease participating and how to re-engage them, and how participating in musical activities influences perceived well-being.
