Racial Plays: Representations of Blackness in Seventeenth-century Scandinavia and the Holy Roman Empire

Linnea Ripenberg is a PhD candidate in the History of ideas at Stockholm university.

In this seminar she presents her PhD project, which investigates representations of Africans and blackness in theatrical ceremonies in early modern Scandinavia and the Holy Roman Empire. Blackface practices, concepts and narratives, and symbolic violence are significant themes in the study.
